Back to 224. Wow, its been a long time since this issue came out.

Page 11-

One of the neat things John Workman does with his letters is stick word balloons to the edges of a panel and drop the border out for it. I think its stylish and looks super cool. This page has a lot of great examples of it but my favorite is Sally’s first word balloon in panel 03, it knocks out the whole corner and really helps her to pop out and further highlight her dominance over Geoffrey in the shot.

Bouncing back to panel 01 you’ll see I did the panel as a bleed but it was cropped with a border on the left for the final art. I think the crop looks better especially with the cool location title cut into the top of panel!

This page is also a good example to see that from my pencils to inks the characters get even more roughed up than I had originally envisioned. If you’ve dug out your copy of the issue you’ll see that Sally and Geoffrey’s hair become more frazzled and even their cheek tufts show some wear.

Page 12-

I’m really happy with the second panel. A big quiet shot to tone everything down after all the fighting .

Page 13-

I think my personal favorite background character I’ve drawn is the pink girl in the background of panel 01. I can’t recall if I mentioned this before, but the dog peeking around the pointing guy is a design from Dave Manak in issue 24. I think he was an apple salesman? I draw him in every crowd scene now. He gets all over town.

In panel 03 there I like everything but Nicole’s mouth.

I feel weirded out about doing some references so she doesn’t look exactly right, but in panel 04 down there the girl in the back is, in my mind, Maka from Soul Eater. I remember thinking I should not show the x pattern of her straps otherwise it’ll be perfectly obvious. Now I wish I had, I dont know why I chickened out. And I should have drawn her skirt as a plaid.

Page 14-

I recall having a miserable time trying to figure out panel 01. Sometimes the simplest shots can be the hardest apparently. I really like how it turned out in the end though. In fact, I really like how this whole page turned out. There’s a lot of fun drawing in there.

I dislike Hamlin’s design. He’s a generic cartoon pig, totally lifeless and very un-Sonic to me. Sometimes I have fun sketching out redesigns for characters and I did Hamlin a little while ago. I wanted to include the drawings with this post but I can’t find them. Maybe they’ll surface later.

Page 15-

I frequently find Naugus annoying to draw because he’s almost always doing the same “evil smile” facial expression. Throughout this issue I tried to bump up the range of expressions he would make. I think this page (along with page 16) are good set of different kinds of evil smiles.

Matt Herms colors on Naugus in panel 03 are particularly excellent. You get a real sense of him existing in 3d space and are probably my favorite color in the entire issue.

Page 06 final pencils-

I’m unhappy with how I did a lot of the special effects in this page. I’m not into the chunky blur on the sword hilt for panel 01, or the less than spectacular effect of Sonic blocking a bunch of ice needles in panel 04. I should have done much, much better.

What I am happy with is the sense of movement throughout the entire page. I feel like I captured a very natural progression of the characters bouncing from one panel to the next.

You’ll notice if you’ve got a copy of 224 anywhere nearby that you can see Naugus’s left arm in panel 05 in my pencils but the panel is cropped in the actual issue. I’m assuming this is a choice made by Terry Austin, the inker. I’ve been noticing this more and more as I compare pencils to inks and I think this can be a good choice on his part to cap a lot of the bleeds I draw and focus the action as well as balance the page. As much as I enjoy the full pose I’ve drawn here for Naugus I really like that white space underneath the full bleed panel you find in the actual comic. I really, really like the choice to drop the right panel border on panel 01 up at the top. Looking in the actual comic you’ve got just that little sliver of Naugus and I love it! Makes me think of the stylish little panels Bill Watterson would do for Calvin and Hobbes.

Page 07-

Ah, okay here we go. I was surprised to find how much I was liking my art in the first five pages of 224 when my memories of my work in the issue were less than favorable, but here’s a page I’m not too keen on. Mainly its all in Panel 02. Many problems.

I do like Naugus’s flailing backward while shooting fire in panel 04, thats a good pose and a fun little piece of character reaction.

I also really enjoyed the idea of Elias coming in and totally whaling for a moment. I don’t know much about him aside from he is Sally’s brother and the current King, but man it would be cool if that guy did more stuff like this! The guy has clearly got some skill. And he’s a squirrel right? He’s got an awfully fox-like tail for a squirrel. You can see in the layouts I drew him with a standard cartoon squirrel tail and I may have briefly considered drawing the tail different for the final pencils. Not like the layouts though as that is standard cartooning and too literal, not very Sonic like. I would go with a tail like Ray’s from Sonic Arcade if I was allowed. With his current tail you could argue the point that Elias is a squirrel-chipmunk and that perhaps the cross breeding has altered aspects of his tail, but that seems uselessly complicated to me.

Oh, my absolute favorite thing about page 07 is Naugus’s face in the last panel in the layouts. I love that frown.

Page 08-

This is my favorite of all the layout pages and my least favorite for the actual pencils. I absolutely love the two little stick versions of Hamlin and Dylan running off to do battle in panel 03. I love all the little stick characters! I also think Hamlin’s expression and drawing in the layout for panel 04 are far superior to the actual drawing I did for the pencils.

Going back to panel 03 though, its important to create compelling and dynamic “camera” angles in comics, especially in Sonic. You also want to make sure the shot you choose is telling the appropriate story. I love the layouts for panel 03 because its very funny to me, but that’s exactly the problem as it should not be funny. The two characters are running off to do battle and hearing something that stops them in their tracks. It should be dramatic or intense. So I rotated our camera a little to get a more interesting view of the situation and hopefully take an originally boring shot into a more exciting one. If you’ve still got your 224 around compare the eyes of Hamlin and Dylan in the pencils to your issue.

Page 09-

Here’s a couple of nice differences between layouts and pencils. Panel 01 changed completely and panel 02 was reversed. I think the layout of panel 01 is very exciting and you’ve got a lot intensity with Hamlin’s large figure. I also think the small Sonic off to the side changes the tone of his dialog for the panel to be more humorous than the final result. I think this is overall a cool possibility for the scene but it has a flaw and some missed opportunities that I luckily caught on to and adjusted for the pencils.

If you check your issue of 224 you’ll find that Hamlin speaks first, followed by Penelope, and then Sonic. The order that characters speak in comics is all important and the artist needs to make sure characters are placed to allow for the correct order. In general, you want the first character to speak on the left and move to the right accordingly. My layout mixes the order up and complicates the readers progression by placing Penelope first instead of Hamlin. You can of course get a little creative and place Hamlin’s text below Penelope’s to solve this problem but I gained more opportunities to provide better storytelling for the following panels by shifting my camera in panel 01.

In the layout my view allows for only three characters but when I shift the view behind Sonic in the pencils I’ve suddenly gained room for twice as many characters and their reactions to the argument. Most importantly though I’ve given the reader a clear understanding of where all the characters are currently located so that when we move to panel 02 its immediately understood Rosemary is standing higher than Rotor. This gives her more authority in the panel and maximizes the impact of Rotor’s frustration and weakness. By excluding Uncle Chuck in panel 01 it helps sell the story that he stalks toward Rosemary in panel 03.

I was super happy to get to do some exaggerated expressions in this page. Penelope slamming her hands in panel 01 and especially Rotor’s ‘One Piece’ style exasperation compared to Rosemary’s collected demeanor in panel 02 were a blast. I love stylish and exaggerated storytelling when its appropriate. (And in my personal opinion with something like Sonic the Hedgehog thats almost all the time!) My personal take on this moment when reading the script was that because Naugus was manipulating emotions we got a lot of characters overreacting and behaving like fools in a fairly serious situation. A perfect opportunity to get a little wild with these characters.

And bam, page 10!-

I went digging through my files and could not find layouts after page 09. I think what happened is I forgot to do layouts for the rest of the comic and I’m lucky that the editor Paul Kaminski trusted me to carry through the rest of the comic without seeing what I intended to do. At this point I was starting to feel very tired and burnout with the 2010 Christmas holiday and the amount of work I was doing. I’m pretty sure this was the first and last time layouts just slipped my mind.

This page was a lot of fun and hard work to do though. When designing this room I did a lot of research for Eggman styled headquarters in past videogames, especially Sonic Adventure. That door for example in panel 02 is lifted straight out of the game. While you’re looking at that door right below it is a second Egg mobile station. That one belongs to Snively, and although you can’t see it, to Eggman’s left is where Lien-Da’s Egg Mobile is. They are both set lower than Eggman so its clear who exactly is in charge here.

Speaking of Snively, I think he is a hideously designed character and can’t stand him. I’m always looking for ways to make him more palatable.

Up next 224 Part 3!

Wow, its been nearly a year since I drew this issue. I recall working on the pages of 224 around the time I was supposed to travel back home to visit family for Christmas last December. Some friends suggested showing my layouts would be cool this time around as they might provide some fun insight into creating Sonic comics.

So all right, let’s do it.

First, just in case anyone is not familiar with the process of making comics, I as a penciller receive a script from the writer describing how many panels are on a page and what actions and dialog need to be in those panels.

My job is then to come up with the most exciting but easily readable sequence of those descriptions. I’ll start by making thumbnail versions of each page showing my intended layout of the entire comic to the editor so he can make a quick judgement on whether or not its working and if anything needs to be changed.

I use to do my layouts as rough versions of the final pencils like page 4 here from Sonic #218.

And now compare it to the final pencils and you can see I did the bulk of the work during the layout phase.

The problem I had with this approach was that I put a lot of time and energy into practically drawing the final pencils for each page when I couldn’t be certain any of them would be approved. I was taking a risk that I wouldn’t have to change anything and taking a lot of time doing it. I started to stress out about getting my layouts done as fast as possible but still produce rough completed pencils. It began to feel like an unhealthy expectation.

So about half way through issue 223 I decided to simplify my layouts to increase speed and make layouts fun.

When issue 224 rolled around my layouts looked this:

Page 1 layout-

The script describes a splash panel along with all appropriate text, titles, credits, and roll call. When laying out pages I also like to plan for balloon placement to make sure the page reads correctly. This is mainly just for myself as in the end I leave all final placement of speech balloons and titles up to the letterer.

My only responsibility is to provide pencils for the art.

Page 01 final pencils-

Now if you happen to have your copy of 224 around you’ll see that somewhere down the production line it was decided that the Naugus I drew for the roll call should be replaced with a different character.

Page 03 layout-

Page 03 Final Pencils-

Here you can see I switched the placement of Geoffrey and Sally in panel 02 from layout to final pencil. The basic rule of thumb is to have whoever speaks first in a panel on the left. I accommodated for her being on the right in the layout by placing her speech balloon at the top of the panel, forcing the reader to see her first before moving down to Geoffrey. My idea behind making this choice was that in the story Sally and Geoffrey are in the middle of a confrontation and I wanted to give the sense that Sally is agitated and in motion as she circles around a confident and calm Geoffrey. I felt this would be easily achieved as Sally is on his right in panel 02 and as we progress to panel 03 Sally has shifted to his left indicated by the direction of her body and literally by the placement of her in the panel above Geoffrey. If this wasn’t enough I’ve got three little motion lines intended to help show Sally’s quick change in position.

Apparently I must have chickened out and went with a safe storytelling approach. I still have some action lines in panel 03 but this time to me they don’t necessarily indicate Sally physically moving but the rising intensity of her dialog.

Oh yeah, I use to absolutely loathe those two main background characters in panel 05. Sometimes when doing roughs I’ll quickly sketch out some shapes and i interpreted those to create those two. I had intended to go back and create better looking fellows but as time wore on and I had more artistically demanding pages later on in the issue I reluctantly accepted they had to stay. I don’t hate them as much now because I realized the city can’t be entirely populated by cool characters, some of them have to be normal or like these two, a couple of buffoons.

Page 04-

I’m fond of this page. I like when the characters get to do cool things. There’s a lot of action packed into this one page but it doesn’t feel forced or rushed.

Page 05-

Huh, I like this page too. I’m kind of surprised because when I think about issues 223 and 224 I just recall being burnt out and tired all the time. I’ve got kind of a negative memory about it all I guess. But now that I’m looking at these I feel like this stuff is pretty cool. It was a lot of fun designing the Engine Room there for example. I just started playing Sonic Colors around this time and I looked to that game to influence Eggman’s tech. I had fun, as simple as it may be, trying to imagine if the engine room were in the games how would this be designed to allow Sonic to run around it. In the background you’ll notice a couple of platforms sticking out, a hint of a track that runs around the base, and several tunnels that allow Eggman to move about the Death Egg 2 as well as Sonic to grind through with the little rail seen at the bottom of panel 05.

There are more pages to talk about but that’ll have to be in Part 2.

Here’s some pencils. Things are really starting to get exciting at this point in the story.

Page 1- I like how Panel 1 turned out. I’m not into drawing lifeless crowds or having to make characters up on the spot. Shortly after getting my first assignment from Archie I had intended to go through past comics and find any background characters I thought were appealing, then make up a couple of my own, and have a stock of background citizens.

Unfortunately I hadn’t found the time to do it when issue 221 rolled around with its massive concert audience. I had to make quite a few characters on the spot and I wasn’t happy about it. This time around I was a little more prepared and I was able to pull from the more successful attempts in 221. I just realized it’s a downer that I didn’t include Dave Manak’s pig from issue 24 here. I do however have the apple cart dog from issue 24 between Bunnie and Geoffrey in Panel 01.

My favorite background character here is the baboon. He’s a guy who builds things, maybe he’s a carpenter or just a construction worker type. I’m not sure if he has a purpose in life now that Nicole just whips everything up out of nanites. Another character to point out is the punk rock frog next to Sonic in Panel 01. When I was drawing the crowd Dustin Weaver, the guy who draws S.H.I.E.L.D., requested him.

Also, these background characters wouldn’t work out at all if the colorist Matt Herms wasn’t willing to spend the extra time referencing all the little notes I send him about who’s who and where they are at. I really appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with him in bringing the city’s inhabitants to life. It may not seem like such a problem here but six issues from now when I tell him this character appeared in Panel 02 on Page 14 of Issue 2XX, could you please color them the same shade of purple with the yellow shoes and the single green bracelet on the LEFT wrist, it might be a little more annoying.

Thanks a ton Matt for your patience and hard work!!!

Page 5-

I just really like the action in this page.

Page9-

I was super excited when I read this part of the script and I got to draw Geoffrey exactly as I hoped for Panel 02. Just for a moment we get to see underneath his controlled, smug exterior and then he’s right back into it in the next panel.

You’ll notice if you compare my Panel 05 with the published copy that I never drew the black strip between Geoffrey’s eyes. My design is based mostly on Spaz’s Sega-like version of Geoffrey he did for the cover of Sonic Archives Vol. 11. For me, that’s easily the best that characters ever looked and where the modern design should be built from. However, I’m not satisfied with how I’ve drawn Geoffrey so far. I knew it was a problem but I didn’t really reflect on it until recently. The mental image I have of the character that I remember from when I was younger is that he’s a tough guy and a bit thicker. I’m looking forward to the next time I get to draw him and trying to tweak his design a bit to capture the essence of St. John.

Oh, as its been made obvious that the modern design should have the black strip between the eyes I’ll include it of course. If it were up to me though I’d totally axe it. In fact if it were up to me Geoffrey, as a skunk in Sonic’s world, would not have black fur.

Page 12 A-

Page 12 B-

Allright here’s something a little different. Page 12 A is the publisehed art and B was my first attempt at the page. You’ll notice the primary difference is Naugus’s visual appearance.

When I found out I would be drawing Naugus in issue 221 I went through a lot of reference on the characters appearance in the cartoons and comics. I just assumed that any differences were artistic interpretation. My personal preference is to try and make all things appear to follow the game design rules. Or rather how I perceive the games to have design rules.

So in my mind Naugus needs to be simple like his original cartoon version and have shapes as part of his design to better fit in the Sonic world. When I first started drawing him I couldn’t make sense out of him (the collar to his cape literally makes no sense) and for quite a while my drawings for him have all be explorations on what he could/should look like. It was also really difficult for me to take this character seriously so a certain goofiness poured out of him in the beginning.

But then I got direction to make Naugus more in line with his visual appearance in issue 222 so I came back through and uglied him up.

The other big difference from A to B is in Panel 05 where the city is no longer devoid of life.

Page 13 A-

Page 13 B-

Big difference here is Panel 02 where Geoffrey performs his judo throw. My first attempt in Page B is far more accurate in how to perform the throw but doesn’t offer the most compelling visual or immediately understandable action.

I think Panel 03′s pretty cool. I especially love the tiny figures of Amy and Tail’s. Throughout this issue I really enjoyed having Tails and Amy interact.

Page 14-

You should totally grab your copy of 223 if you’ve got it to compare this page to what I originally pencilled. I mean really compare them.

Panel 01- I just think thats a cool kick. Nothing different here.

Panel 02- One of my favorite things to draw are hands. I really was really pumped about this moment in the script where Sally and Geoffrey are facing off, ready to bust out some judo at any moment.

Panel 03- Check it out I forgot to draw Sally’s eyelashes for her right eye. Fortunately someone helped me out along the way!

Panel 04- Here it is! This was a HUGE surprise to me! You’ll notice by comparing how drastically that changes the tone of his dialog. I’m not certain when this decision was made after I turned in my pencils or what precisely it means. Now even I’m in the dark to what’s going on inside Geoffrey’s head!

Page 15 A-

Page 15 B-

Some different versions of Naugus. You’ll also notice that Panel 04 is totally different between the two. My perspective was off with my first attempt in Page B but I love how cool that back shot of Naugus is in the revision for Page A. Also something I love, although I’m not sure when it happened, is Uncle Chuck’s color change. It’s sooo much cooler to make him more unique than just Sonic with hair.

Oh and small detail I really enjoy is Hamlin’s coffee cup. I thought about drawing it so that in every scene he’s constantly saving it from sliding off but I thought it was much funnier that it just sits there. Defiant.

Panel 5 A- There’s all kinds of little touches from each of the different creators that ultimately shape your reading experience. In this case, you’ll see by comparing to your copy that Naugus gained just a hint of drool.

Panel 6- I forgot to draw the jacket detail on Elias throughout this entire issue. In trying to find reference I didn’t know what made his outfit different from any of the other council members. You’ll see in issue 224 though I found some cool details about his outfit.

Page 17- This one’s really just for fun with a big face-off panel referencing Sonic and the Black night. This is one of the few times I didn’t take into account the need for teaser text and just drew what I wanted. Fortunately John Workman found a nice frame with Naugus’s leg. Now you can see the whole thing here.

I’ve never played Sonic and the Black Night. Unfortunately it’s not the experience I’ m looking for with Sonic the Hedgehog but I still think its a lot of fun to reference the game for any fans regardless. I went through and watched a lot of gameplay videos and had a great time admiring all the illustrations made for the story mode.

I really like the unique design for Caliburn and absolutely love the imagination and playfulness of the face design. Its a good looking talking sword. Perhaps a little excessive in detail for Sonic but I guess that gets explained away as him being in some other world not his own. Anyway for this issue it required Sonic wielding the Sword of Light. I received some reference on the sword as it appeared in previous issues drawn by different artists with two differing designs. I chose the more unique of the two and learned that the sword use to be the Sword of Acorns and was upgraded to the Sword of Light. I’m not sure what that process is like but I thought it was an excellent time to bump up the design a bit, make the sword even more unique and reference Caliburn as much as possible.

If you’ve got the time, let me know what you thought of this issue. Up next is I intend to post some pages from issue 224. Anyone out there who would have an interest in seeing specific pages?

This issue means a lot to me as its my first cover illustration for Sonic, which I was lucky enough to create all the art for and I followed it up by pencilling the interior. It’s a pretty fantastic opportunity!

When I first received the script for “Changing Tempo” I was surprised to find that I needed to create a concert and the performance of a song without sound. I believe there are only a few things that simply cannot be done in comics, music being at the top. But I think the team of professionals assembled for this issue got as close as anyone can get. I’m really thrilled at how well 221 turned out.

Here’s a few pages of pencils.

Page 1- This was a lot of fun and I tried to get every cameo I wanted to draw into this one shot. Some of the characters are a dead giveaway but I was really surprised to see over at Bumbleking that almost every character hidden in there was spotted. Almost.

There’s one character hidden in silhouette, you can’t even see it entirely because I didn’t want to be too obvious, and the other is the blue bat guy right up front. I was so caught up in doing cameos that I broke my design rule and gave the guy hair. I console myself with the knowledge that he is not an actual Sonic character, he’s just for fun, and will not appear again.

I’m happy the Babylon Rogues weren’t too vague and that my two fan girls joke got noticed.

If you grab your copy of the issue you’ll find two things different from my original pencils. The first- In the printed comic you’ll find a sign in the back of the crowd to the right that seems to say “U SUX”. That’s not my doing and I’m intensely curious at what point in the production that sign popped up. Who is wielding that sign?

The second- In my pencils up by the Babylon Rogues you’ll find Nack the Weasel. Or Fang the Sniper if you prefer, but to stick with the Archie character I’ll keep going with Nack.

As a kid I didn’t own a Game Gear so it would be many many years before I could play Triple Trouble and find out what Nack was like, what’s his story. I have a clear memory of the first time I saw him on the box art at the Sears video game department and I thought he looked super cool! And Knuckles was back! I wanted to play that game so bad.

Not too long after that Archie released the Sonic Triple Trouble comic special and I got to see a take on the character. Which I liked. It’s been many many years since I read that issue but I remember he was a punk who walloped Sonic. Or maybe I’m getting that confused with issue 40…

Anyway, I think Nack is pretty cool and I would really love to see him featured in newer Sonic games. I’d be super excited to see what his updated design would look like. I thought it was pretty funny that he was there hanging out in the crowd to see the show and I understand why he would get taken out.

Page 03- This page is an excellent example of why it’s so cool for me to work at Archie right now with the editor Paul Kaminski. Paul has been super supportive of every creative idea I’ve had so far working on the series. As I was reading the script the moment Sally abandoned Sonic’s arm to hug her friend I instantly saw how penciller Dave Manak would handle the scene. I absolutely had to do it. But I wasn’t sure if it would be acceptable to switch styles for a single panel, just because I wanted to.

Fortunately for me Paul let me have free reign!

Page 06-

In panel 2 I received a lot of guidance in the construction of a stadium by S.H.I.E.L.D artist Dustin Weaver. The guy is unbelievable. I can walk up to him and say; “I’ve got this idea and I want to draw this difficult thing. Whats the best way?” and he’ll respond with “Oh yeah, I had to draw one of those in this issue of…” and he’ll pull it off the shelf. Showing me a level of dedication and visual mastery I’ll never achieve. And then give me a detailed run down for how to build it. He’s an artistic juggernaut! Check out the madness in Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D.

For panel 3 this came about while I was doing research on Dave Manak’s style. I was going through Sonic #40 and found these super neat panels with solid color silhouettes. They look so cool! To achieve it though I had to see if colorist Matt Herms also thought the idea was good enough. As you can see in your copy he knocked it out! Thanks a ton, Matt!

Page 08

And thanks again to Matt here for working with my ideas. As you can see there are no music notes in the pencil and ink stages. I created all of them digitally as I wanted them to be all kinds of colors. This again required the cooperation of Matt, whether he thought the idea was a good one and that the colors of the music would not interfere with his other colors on the page. I potentially created a colorists nightmare for him.

Hopefully not. I think he did a stupendous job with this entire issue. I love all the atmosphere created in the concert and the way he handled the lighting. Thats all Matt and its all fantastic!

Page 13- I really like the drawing of Mina for the third panel.

I’m many months behind on this and I figure its time I start catching up to the issues that are currently out. So here we go, some original pencils for Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog Issue 218.

Page 2 – Here is a full shot of the Oil Ocean in panel 1. It was a lot of fun for me to look through tons of imagery for reference, the resource I used heavily (besides playing the video game myself) was Zone: 0. That guy has a created a fantastic treasury of Sonic information! And as you can see by referencing your own issue of 218, Matt Herms put all the effort into rendering out Bunny’s rocket blasts. The collaboration of comics is a lot of fun to leave areas open ended for the next guy and see what cool things they come up with to bring the art further to life.

I’m also really into the black Matt chose to use on Bunnie and The Baron’s character roster emblems. Gives the whole scene a great moody compliment.

Page 4 – Without the lettering you can see Bunny’s arm makes a loop here when she reels it back in. Another excellent choice by Matt Herms is in the bottom left panel. He blurs the color of the background without blurring the inked lines giving the panel a fantastic visual effect. Blur is frequently poorly used in digital imagery often resulting in flat, lifeless effect. But here Matt nailed it!

Page 7 – When I read the script I was really excited about panel 4 because I would get to use an effect that I really enjoy out of manga and anime that shows a rising level of intensity. When I think about this effect THIS always comes to mind. And interestingly when the editor Paul Kaminski saw my initial pass at the panel he could tell I was holding back on the effect and told me to go for it. I bumped it up just a tad to what you see here but I was still unsure how far I should push it. In working with Paul now for several issues and knowing that he’s encouraging and open about doing cool imagery, so long as it supports the story, I think now a days I’d feel a lot more comfortable exaggerating the effect. I’m really happy that Matt used dramatic lighting and gave it a touch of red for mood.

Page 12 - It was interesting for me, when flipping through the pages of the final comic to see that Avery’s bazooka had changed slightly. In the pencils you’ll notice that I drew a large round missile sticking out of the bazooka.

Page 13 – I think this page is a good example of how cool and fun the letterer John Workman can be with Archie’s Sonic comics. In panel 3 I drew all this wrecked Oil Ocean stuff but left very little room for John to do his job. A very poor choice on my part. I think its super cool if you take a look at finished comic, that rather than cover the visuals that we need to see for the scene he lettered around the wreckage!

One thing that you’ll see here though thats tough to see in the comic is in panel 2, Avery’s missile is flying around for a little while before it comes down on Page 14.

Page 17 – For this last page I had an idea that I wanted to do a super cool shot of Castle Acorn. I began sketching out my idea but felt like something more, something cooler could be done. One of the fantastic things about being a member of Periscope Studio is that I’m surrounded by all kinds of amazing illustrators and I can ask for someone to take a look at my work and make suggestions to improve it. One mentor that I frequently call on is super nova illustrator Dustin Weaver who is currently doing the art for Marvel’s S.H.E.I.L.D. series. Although he’s doing more work than I would think is humanly possible to create that story, he seems to be willing to cast his brilliance my way now and again. So it went this way, I ask Dustin “How can I make this better?”, Dustin makes sketch, ends up drawing more than he needs to, he’s helping, he’s helping, and all of a sudden he’s drawn the whole panel.

Up next I’ll be posting some pencils from issue 221! Here we go!

Comparing it to your copy of the issue you’ll notice that I originally drew Amy much smaller and this is a mistake on my part. By looking at the curving stonework on the ground and the two characters on the right Amy is standing at about the same distance away from Sonic and Sally, but I drew her as if she’s way back there. Fortunately someone along the way noticed my goof and helped me out by adjusting her to the correct size. Thank you, masked stranger!

I felt bad about drawing Amy at the wrong size so there she is, a drawing all to herself.

Very soon I’ll be journeying north to Seattle to be a part of the Emerald City Comic Convention. Anyone going should stop by my table and introduce themselves! I know only a few people in the Seattle area so I’ll be looking forward to add some names to my Palpad.

I’ll be a part of the Periscope Studio block so you’ll get the chance to check out all the fantastic people I’m lucky enough to work with and study from everyday! The studio boasts artists and writers who work in every part of the comic industry so there’s certain to be someone you’ll be interested in. If you aren’t already.

Like writer Jeremy Barlow, who has all kinds of cool projects going. One of them a horror mini-comic called ‘The Stain’. He wrote, I drew it, and it’ll be sitting on our table ready for your enjoyment.

I’m hoping to spend my weekend drawing up a storm just like last year. I didn’t actually have a table last time but somehow I got to spend most of the convention doing sketches. Some of them I know can be seen online. What a blast!

See you there!

My favorite part of this drawing turned out to be Superman. I’m not really into the character Superman EXCEPT when it comes to the WB/Bruce Timm animated series. Then, I love Superman. Although my interest is almost exclusively due to the exquisite animation by TMS, I became invested in the characters and the stories enough to still appreciate episodes like ‘The Main Man’ and ‘Apokolips… Now!’. But man how I wish TMS got to do those two episodes!!!

It’s been years since I’ve seen so many of theepisodes and I need to. I really really need to. Especially the Bizarro stuff!
