Assistant work leads to fun

One of the recent assistant tasks I’ve been doing is working on a project that has a Dennis the Menace style of characters. I barely remembered Dennis the Menace but there was some comic books brought in for reference that kept tempting me to read them. What I vaguely recalled of Dennis gave me the idea that I didn’t like it, but I borrowed a couple of the comics and I can say I really really like this stuff! The artwork is fantastic, I have seen four different styles, and the stories are charming and humorous. Henry Mitchell, Dennis’ dad, turns out to be my favorite character because he looks so darn cool.

I will say though that some of the comics I’ve borrowed are down right bad. What I think is that these are later issues and that its the early work I admire.

I  wanted to draw Henry Mitchell, but I didn’t think that was enough of a character for anyone to recognize. I intend to color this as well but here’s the line art so far.

I was also introduced to Little Lulu!
